چکیده

The genus Crocus L. (Iridaceae) comprises about 80 species distributed mainly in the Mediterranean region. It is widely dispersed in Turkey; at present about 67 taxa (including subspecies and varieties) are recognized there (Mathew, 1984, 1988, 1995, 2000; Kerndorff and Pasche, 2003, 2004). The Turkish Crocus species have received attention by several workers, who have concentrated mainly on morphology (e.g., Mathew, 1984) and anatomy (Akan and Eker, 2004; Özdemir, 2002; Özdemir et al., 2004). In Europe, several Crocus species have been examined for pollen morphology (Grilli Caiola et al., 1993; Chichiriccò, 1999; Furness, 1985; Heslop-Harrison, 1977; Mariotti, 1988). There is no detailed study of the pollen morphology of Turkish Crocus species. This study investigates the pollen morphology of some of these taxa, using light and electron microscopy, and provides palynological information about the genus in the Turkish flora.

Cloning, structural characterization, and phylogenetic analysis of flower MADS-box genes from crocus (Crocus sativus L.).

Crocus (Crocus sativus L.) is a crop species cultivated for its flowers and, more specifically, for its red stigmas. The flower of crocus is bisexual and sterile, since crocus is a triploid species. Its perianth consists of six petaloid tepals: three tepals in whorl 1 (outer tepals) and three tepals in whorl 2 (inner tepals). The androecium consists of three distinct stamens and the gynoecium c...

Repetitive DNA sequences in Crocus vernus Hill (Iridaceae): the genomic organization and distribution of dispersed elements in the genus Crocus and its allies.

Eight clones of repetitive DNA were isolated from Crocus vernus Hill. The genomic organization of the clones was analyzed by in situ hybridization to C. vernus and Southern hybridization to a range of Crocus and other species. Seven clones were used for in situ hybridization. Sequence analysis showed that all eight clones were nonhomologous, and thus represented eight different sequence-familie...

Aperture Pattern and Microsporogenesis in Asparagales

The aperture pattern of pollen grains is a character defined as the number, shape, and position of apertures. Although this character is highly variable in angiosperms, two states are particularly widespread. Pollen grains with one polar aperture occur frequently in basal angiosperms and monocots while tricolpate pollen is a synapomorphy of the eudicots. Many morphological characters are the re...

Multiple developmental pathways leading to a single morph: monosulcate pollen (examples from the Asparagales).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Early developmental events in microsporogenesis are known to play a role in pollen morphology: variation in cytokinesis type, cell wall formation, tetrad shape and aperture polarity are responsible for pollen aperture patterning. Despite the existence of other morphologies, monosulcate pollen is one of the most common aperture types in monocots, and is also considered as the...

The Role of Phylogenetic Constraints in the Evolution of Pollination Mechanisms in Iridaceae of Sub-Saharan Africa

Novel, specialized systems exploiting bibionid flies, oil-collecting bees, wasps, or crepuscular settling moths as pollen vectors are added to the range of recorded pollination mechanisms in sub-Saharan Africa Iridaceae, while knowledge of the pollination of previously understudied genera such as Aristea, Bahiana, Ferraria, Hesperantha, and Tritoniopsis is expanded. The pollination of 357 speci...
